It is a historical event that happened almost 2000 years ago. We weren’t there to see it, but we have full confidence that it occurred because God’s Word tells us it happened and He gave us the Holy Spirit to assure us of our faith in the Scriptures. The resurrection is so important to the Christian faith that all four Gospel writers gave numerous facts of its reality. We will be looking at a portion of John’s account of Thomas’s post-resurrection encounter with Jesus. </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">But before we get there, let me ask you something. Do you want all your sins forgiven? It seems like a simple question that most people would respond to with a “Yes”. If our sins are not forgiven, we have a big problem. The problem is our eternal destination. Having our sins forgiven comes down to whether we have faith or not. It’s about believing in Jesus and His work at the cross. It’s about believing with such faith that we submit to Him as both Lord and Savior. </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">So, my title in today’s message comes from words that Jesus spoke to Thomas. He told Thomas in verse 27 to believe. It was a call to a life-changing kind of belief. He is calling all of us here today to believe the same way as He expressed to Thomas.</span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">The result of believing is life (30-31). Further down in John 20:30-31 it says: “(30) Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. (31) But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">All we need to believe can be found in the written words of the Bible. That is all we need. When we exercise genuine belief, we enter into eternal life. The Bible was written by holy men inspired by the Holy Spirit. But, the natural man does not accept the things of God. </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">Understanding follows faith. It follows believing. 1 Cor. 2:14 says: “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.” </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">After we believe, God gives us to the Holy Spirit to help our faith increase even more. Without the Holy Spirit, we are not a Christian. Romans 8:9 says: “You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.”</span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">The result of unbelief is death. Rev. 21:8 includes unbelieving in the list of those who are cast into the lake of fire: “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars </span><span style="font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">— </span><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">I had just asked you if you want your sins forgiven. That only can happen by believing in Jesus. That’s why I titled our message, “Believe.” It’s not my words. It is God’s call to those who are lost in unbelief. Jesus' purpose in coming to us was to seek and save the lost. The lost are unbelievers like many of us once were. The lost have to be converted to belief by the Word of God.</span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;font-size:12.0pt;"> </span><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">Romans 10:9 says: “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” We will see Thomas making that declaration today. The belief we will be talking about today is a belief that sets your life on a brand new course. </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">It is not just agreeing to the facts of the Bible, but such belief that leads you to say the words Paul said in Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">We as Christians experience a spiritual death and resurrected life that begins with faith in Jesus who gave Himself for us. When Paul said he lived by faith in the Son of God, he was speaking of the resurrected, renewed, transformed life that follows proper belief in Jesus. Praise God for the resurrection of Christ which enabled us also, to live by faith. </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-weight:bold;font-size:12.0pt;">1. “Unless I See, I will not Believe” (vs. 24-25) </span></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">(24) Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. (25) So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”</span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">Jesus had appeared to the other 10 disciples 8 days earlier but for some reason, Thomas “missed church that day,” He wasn’t at that gathering. We often refer to Thomas as “doubting Thomas” in this passage but Thomas is not the only one who struggled in believing the resurrection. Earlier as Mary Magdalene went to the tomb, she had thought someone had stolen the body. </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">Look at verses 11-14 of John 20: (11) Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. (13) They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” (14) At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">Mary would eventually recognize Him even though at first, she was thinking He was the gardener. Jesus had often told his disciples that He would die, but rise again. But, when it actually happened, it wasn’t registering with any of them. They just weren’t thinking about resurrection. They had the vision of Him reigning as a King like David. </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">In Luke’s account of the resurrection, when the women came to speak to the eleven about Jesus being alive, look how they responded: (11) But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">We can just attribute the unbelieving to Thomas. On the road to Emmaus, it wasn’t until Jesus broke bread with Him that they recognized Him and then went to tell the others who they saw. In our text, Thomas said, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Thomas is not much different than any of us so let’s not think we are any better. God alone gets the glory for any of us who believe. </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">God is working right now with His Word so that belief will result in the hearts of those listening. Romans 10:17 says: “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” That’s exactly what John meant when he wrote: “these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” Thomas wanted to be sure that the Jesus they saw was indeed Jesus. There will be hard things for us to understand and accept just like the followers of Jesus were struggling with here. But believing is trusting God even when we can’t see. Paul wrote in 2 Cor.5:7 7 For we live by faith, not by sight. Faith gives us spiritual vision that helps us to see what physical eyes are incapable of seeing. Let’s look at what Jesus said in Matthew 12:39-40:39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Jesus referred to the Word in Jonah pointing to Himself after His Crucifixion. The Word is all we need, no signs! Let’s keep looking at the Word.</span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-weight:bold;font-size:12.0pt;">2. “Stop Doubting and Believe!” (vs. 26-27)</span></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">(26) A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” (27) Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”</span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">Notice the emphasis on the doors being locked. This was even after they saw the risen Christ 8 days earlier. But, Jesus came specifically for Thomas this time. Even with the doors locked, Jesus appeared. A locked door couldn't prevent His resurrected body from entering where they were staying. He came offering peace. This was a typical greeting but in this setting and held a much greater significance. He said, “Peace be with you!” </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">Imagine the setting. The doors were locked for a reason. They were afraid that what happened to Jesus could very well happen to them. They were still afraid even though He had appeared a week ago. When He said “Peace be with you!” He knew how they felt. </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">He knows how we feel. Just as He entered that room at that time and said “Peace be with You,” today, He is telling us the same thing here, today. Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">Jesus heard Thomas speaking the words “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”</span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">Even though He wasn’t around Thomas when He said it. Jesus knows us. He knows our fears and anxieties. He hears our doubting words and thoughts. He is not limited to time and space. Even today, He reveals Himself to us through His Word, and He tells us, “Stop doubting and believe”. </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-weight:bold;font-size:12.0pt;">3. “My Lord and my God!” (vs. 28-29)</span></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">(28) Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” (29) Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”</span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">Thomas saw and believed. Because He saw Jesus, his faith set a new course for his life. By saying, “My Lord and my God!” Thomas was surrendering himself to the reign of Christ over his life. Yes, He believed because He saw Jesus, but he still had to surrender to his Lordship. He did so. </span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">Tradition tells us that Thomas was martyred in 70 AD being tortured by being thrown in an oven and stuck through with spears. So, we should be careful not to downplay Thomas’s belief. The message for all of us here today is in the last part of verse 29: “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”</span></p> <p class="0" style="mso-pagination:none;text-autospace:none;mso-padding-alt:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt;font-size:12.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="0"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;font-size:12.0pt;">We weren’t there when Jesus suffered, died and was raised from the dead and ascended to the Father. But we have multiple eyewitness accounts of His sacrificial work throughout Scripture. 대부분의 사람이 "예"라고 대답할 수 있는 간단한 질문처럼 보입니다. 만약 우리의 죄가 용서받지 못한다면 큰 문제가 있습니다. 문제는 우리의 영원한 목적지입니다. 죄 사함을 받는 것은 믿음이 있느냐 없느냐에 달려 있습니다. 그것은 예수님과 그분의 십자가 사역을 믿는 것입니다. 주님이자 구세주이신 그분께 복종하는 믿음으로 믿는 것입니다. <br /><br />그래서 오늘 제 메시지 제목은 예수님께서 도마에게 하신 말씀에서 따왔습니다. 예수님은 27절에서 도마에게 “믿으라”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그것은 삶을 변화시키는 종류의 믿음에 대한 부름이었습니다. 예수님은 오늘 여기 모인 우리 모두에게 도마에게 말씀하신 것과 같은 방식으로 믿으라고 부르십니다.<br /><br />믿음의 결과는 생명입니다(30-31). 요한복음 20장에서 마지막 부분 30절과 31절에서는 이렇게 말씀합니다. “(30) 예수께서 제자들 앞에서 이 책에 기록되지 아니한 다른 표적도 많이 행하셨으나 (31) 오직 이것을 기록함은 너희로 예수께서 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿게 하려 함이요 또 너희로 믿고 그 이름을 힘입어 생명을 얻게 하려 함이니라”<br /><br />우리가 믿어야 할 모든 것은 성경의 기록된 말씀에서 찾을 수 있습니다. 그것이 우리에게 필요한 전부입니다. 우리가 진정한 믿음을 가질 때 우리는 영생에 들어갑니다. 성경은 성령의 영감을 받은 거룩한 사람들에 의해 기록되었습니다. 그러나 자연인은 하나님의 것을 받아들이지 않습니다. <br /><br />이해는 믿음을 따릅니다. 이해는 믿음을 뒤따릅니다. 고린도전서 2:14은 이렇게 말씀합니다. “우리가 세상의 영을 받지 아니하고 오직 하나님으로부터 온 영을 받았으니 이는 우리로 하여금 하나님께서 우리에게 은혜로 주신 것들을 알게 하려 하심이라”<br /><br />우리가 믿으면 하나님께서는 우리의 믿음이 더욱 성장할 수 있도록 성령을 주십니다. 성령이 없으면 우리는 그리스도인이 아닙니다. 로마서 8장 9절은 "만일 너희 속에 하나님의 영이 거하시면 너희가 육신에 있지 아니하고 영에 있나니 누구든지 그리스도의 영이 없으면 그리스도의 사람이 아니니라"라고 말씀합니다. <br /><br />불신앙의 결과는 죽음입니다. 요한계시록 21장 8절에는 불못에 던져지는 사람들의 목록에 불신자가 포함되어 있습니다: "그러나 두려워하는 자들과 믿지 아니하는 자들과 흉악한 자들과 살인자들과 음행하는 자들과 점술가들과 우상 숭배자들과 거짓말하는 모든 자들은 불과 유황으로 타는 못에 던져지리니 이것이 둘째 사망이라" <br /><br />저는 방금 여러분께 죄를 용서받기를 원하느냐고 물었습니다. 그것은 오직 예수님을 믿어야만 가능합니다. 그래서 제가 메시지 제목을 "믿으라"고 정한 것입니다. 제 말이 아닙니다. 불신앙으로 길을 잃은 사람들을 향한 하나님의 부르심입니다. 예수님이 우리에게 오신 목적은 잃어버린 자를 찾아 구원하는 것이었습니다. 잃어버린 자들은 한때 우리 중 많은 사람이 그랬던 것처럼 불신자들입니다. 잃어버린 자들은 하나님의 말씀에 의해 믿음으로 거듭나야 합니다.<br /><br />로마서 10장 9절은 “네가 만일 네 입으로 예수를 주로 시인하며 또 하나님께서 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 것을 네 마음에 믿으면 구원을 받으리라”라고 말씀합니다. 오늘 우리는 도마가 그 선언을 하는 것을 보게 될 것입니다. 오늘 우리가 이야기할 믿음은 여러분의 삶을 완전히 새로운 길로 이끄는 믿음입니다. <br /><br />성경의 사실에 동의하는 것이 아니라 바울이 갈라디아서 2장 20절에서 "내가 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못 박혔나니 그런즉 이제는 내가 사는 것이 아니요 오직 내 안에 그리스도께서 사시는 것이라"라고 말한 것처럼 믿음을 갖는 것입니다. “이제 내가 육체 가운데 사는 것은 나를 사랑하사 나를 위해 자기 자신을 버리신 하나님의 아들을 믿는 믿음 안에서 사는 것입니다." <br /><br />그리스도인으로서 우리는 우리를 위해 자신을 내어주신 예수님을 믿는 믿음으로 시작되는 영적 죽음과 부활의 삶을 경험합니다. 바울이 하나님의 아들을 믿는 믿음으로 살았다고 했을 때, 그는 예수님을 올바로 믿는 데 따른 부활하고 새롭게 변화된 삶에 대해 말한 것입니다. 우리도 믿음으로 살 수 있게 해주신 그리스도의 부활에 대해 하나님을 찬양합니다. <br /><br />1. “보지 않고는 믿지 아니하겠노라” (24-25) <br />(24) 열두 제자 중 하나로서 디두모라 불리는 도마가 예수께서 오셨을 때에 함께 있지 아니한지라 (25) 다른 제자들이 그에게 이르되 “우리가 주를 보았노라”하니 도마가 이르되 “내가 그의 손에 못 자국을 보며 내 손가락을 그 못 자국에 넣으며 내 손을 그 옆구리에 넣어 보지 않고는 믿지 아니하겠노라” 하니라<br /><br />예수님은 8일 전에 다른 10명의 제자에게 나타나셨지만 어떤 이유에서인지 도마는 그 모임에 참석하지 않고 "그날 교회를 결석"했습니다. 우리는 흔히 이 구절에서 도마를 "의심하는 도마"라고 부르지만, 부활을 믿는 데 어려움을 겪은 사람은 도마뿐이 아닙니다. 막달라 마리아는 무덤에 갔을 때 누군가 시체를 훔쳐갔다고 생각했습니다. <br /><br />요한복음 20장 11~14절을 보세요: (11) 마리아는 무덤 밖에 서서 울고 있더니 울면서 구부려 무덤 안을 들여다보니 (12) 흰옷 입은 두 천사가 예수의 시체 뉘었던 곳에 하나는 머리 편에, 하나는 발 편에 앉았더라 (13) 천사들이 이르되 “여자여 어찌하여 우느냐” 이르되 “사람들이 내 주님을 옮겨다가 어디 두었는지 내가 알지 못함이니이다” (14) 이 말을 하고 뒤로 돌이켜 예수께서 서 계신 것을 보았으나 예수이신 줄은 알지 못하였더라<br /><br />마리아는 처음에는 예수님을 동산지기라고 생각했지만 결국 그분을 알아보게 됩니다. 예수님은 자주 제자들에게 자신이 죽었다가 다시 살아날 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 하지만 실제로 그 일이 일어났을 때, 제자들은 그 사실을 받아들이지 못했습니다. 그들은 부활에 대해 생각하지 않았을 뿐입니다. 그들은 예수님이 다윗처럼 왕으로 통치하실 것이라는 환상을 가지고 있었습니다. <br /><br />누가복음 24장 11절에서 부활에 대한 누가의 기록을 보면, 여인들이 열한 제자들에게 예수님이 살아계신다고 말하러 왔을 때 그들이 어떻게 반응했는지 보세요. "사도들은 그들의 말이 허탄한 듯이 들려 믿지 아니하니" <br /><br />우리는 믿지 않는 도마에게 책임을 돌릴 수 있습니다. 엠마오로 가는 길에 두 제자는 예수님과 함께 떡을 떼고 나서야 예수님을 알아보았고, 그제야 다른 제자들에게 예수님을 본 사실을 알렸습니다. 본문에서 도마는 "내가 그 손의 못 자국을 보고 그 못이 있던 곳에 내 손가락을 넣어 보고 내 손을 그 옆구리에 넣어 보지 아니하면 믿지 아니하겠노라"라고 말했습니다. 도마도 우리와 크게 다르지 않으니, 우리가 더 낫다고 생각하지 맙시다. 믿는 우리는 오직 하나님께만 영광을 돌립시다. <br /><br />하나님께서는 듣는 사람들의 마음에 믿음이 생기도록 지금, 이 순간에도 말씀으로 일하고 계십니다. 로마서 10장 17절은 "그러므로 믿음은 들음에서 나며 들음은 그리스도의 말씀으로 말미암았느니라"라고 말씀합니다. 요한이 "이것을 기록함은 너희로 예수께서 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿게 하려 함이요 또 너희로 믿고 그 이름을 힘입어 생명을 얻게 하려 함이니라"라고 쓴 것도 바로 이 때문입니다. 도마는 자신이 본 예수가 정말 예수인지 확인하고 싶었습니다. 예수를 따르던 제자들이 여기서 어려움을 겪었던 것처럼 우리도 이해하고 받아들이기 어려운 부분이 있을 것입니다. <br /><br />하지만 믿음은 보이지 않을 때에도 하나님을 신뢰하는 것입니다. 바울은 고린도후서 5:7에 “이는 우리가 믿음으로 행하고 보는 것으로 행하지 아니함이로라”라고 말씀합니다. 믿음은 육안으로 볼 수 없는 것을 볼 수 있도록 도와주는 영적인 비전을 우리에게 줍니다." 마태복음 12장 39~40절에서 예수님께서 하신 말씀을 살펴봅시다: "(39) 예수께서 대답하시되 악하고 음란한 세대가 표적을 구하나 선지자 요나의 표적밖에는 보일 표적이 없느니라 (40) 요나가 밤낮 사흘 동안 큰 물고기 뱃속에 있었던 것 같이 인자도 밤낮 사흘 동안 땅속에 있으리라"라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님은 십자가에 못 박히신 후 자신을 가리키며 요나서에 나오는 말씀을 언급하셨습니다. 우리에게 필요한 것은 표징이 아니라 말씀뿐입니다! 계속해서 말씀을 살펴봅시다.<br /><br />2. “믿음 없는 자가 되지 말고 믿는 자가 되라” (26-27)<br />(26) 여드레를 지나서 제자들이 다시 집안에 있을 때에 도마도 함께 있고 문들이 닫혔는데 예수께서 오사 가운데 서서 이르시되 너희에게 평안이 있을지어다 (27) 도마에게 이르시되, 네 손가락을 이리 내밀어 내 손을 보고 네 손을 내밀어 내 옆구리에 넣어 보라 그리하여 믿음 없는 자가 되지 말고 믿는 자가 되라<br /><br />문이 잠겨 있는 것을 강조한 것을 주목하세요. 이것은 8일 전에 부활하신 그리스도를 본 후에도 마찬가지였습니다. 그러나 이번에는 예수님이 특별히 도마를 위해 오셨습니다. 문이 잠긴 상태에서도 예수님은 나타나셨습니다. 잠긴 문은 부활하신 주님의 몸이 그들이 머무는 곳으로 들어오는 것을 막을 수 없었습니다. 예수님은 평화를 주셨습니다. 이것은 전형적인 인사였지만 이 상황에서는 훨씬 더 큰 의미를 담고 있었습니다. 예수님은 "너희에게 평강이 있을지어다!"고 말씀하셨습니다. <br /><br />상황을 상상해 보세요. 문은 이유가 있어서 잠겨 있었습니다. 그들은 예수님에게 일어난 일이 자신들에게도 일어날 수 있다는 것을 두려워했습니다. 예수님이 일주일 전에 나타나셨음에도 불구하고 그들은 여전히 두려워했습니다. 예수님께서 "너희에게 평강이 있을지어다!"라고 말씀하셨을 때. 예수님은 제자들의 마음을 아셨습니다. <br /><br />그분은 우리의 감정을 아십니다. 그 당시 그 방에 들어오셔서 "평강이 있을지어다"라고 말씀하셨던 것처럼, 오늘 이곳에서 우리에게도 같은 말씀을 하고 계십니다. 그리고 도마에게 "여기 손가락을 넣어 내 손을 보라. 손을 내밀어 내 옆구리에 넣어 보러. 의심하지 말고 믿어라."라고 말씀하십니다. <br /><br />예수님은 도마가 "내가 그의 손에 있는 못 자국을 보고 못이 있던 곳에 내 손가락을 넣어 옆구리에 손을 넣어 보지 아니하면 믿지 아니하겠노라"라고 말하는 것을 들으셨습니다.<br /><br />비록 그분은 도마가 그 말을 할 때 그의 곁에 계시지 않았지만. 예수님은 우리를 아십니다. 그분은 우리의 두려움과 불안을 아십니다. 우리의 의심스러운 말과 생각도 들으십니다. 그분은 시간과 공간에 국한되지 않으십니다. 오늘날에도 그분은 말씀을 통해 우리에게 자신을 계시하시며 "의심하지 말고 믿으라"라고 말씀하십니다. <br /><br />3. “나의 주님이시오 나의 하나님이시니이다” (28-29)<br />(28) 도마가 대답하여 이르되 나의 주님이시오 나의 하나님이시니이다 (29) 예수께서 이르시되 너는 나를 본 고로 믿느냐 보지 못하고 믿는 자들은 복되도다<br /><br />도마는 보고 믿었습니다. 예수님을 본 후 그의 믿음은 그의 인생에 새로운 방향을 제시했습니다. "나의 주님이시오, 나의 하나님이시니이다!"라고 말하면서 말입니다. 도마는 자신의 삶에 대한 그리스도의 통치에 자신을 내맡기고 있었습니다. 예, 그는 예수님을 보았기 때문에 믿었지만, 여전히 그의 주되심에 무릎을 꿇어야 했습니다. 그는 그렇게 했습니다. <br /><br />전승에 따르면 도마는 서기 70년에 화덕에 던져지고 창에 찔리는 등 고문을 당하다가 순교했다고 합니다. 따라서 우리는 도마의 믿음을 경시하지 않도록 주의해야 합니다. 오늘 여기 모인 우리 모두에게 주는 메시지는 29절의 마지막 부분에 있습니다: "너는 나를 본고로 믿느냐 보지 못하고도 믿는 자들은 복되도다."<br /><br />예수님께서 고난을 받으시고 죽으시고 부활하셔서 아버지께로 승천하실 때 우리는 그 자리에 없었습니다. 하지만 성경에는 그분의 희생적인 사역에 대한 여러 목격자 기록이 있습니다. 따라서 비록 우리가 예수님을 직접 보지 못했지만 하나님의 은혜로 우리는 그분의 말씀에서 그분을 볼 수 있습니다.<br /><br />결론: “그들에게 모세와 선지자들이 있으니” (누가복음 16:27-31). <br />누가복음 16장에 나오는 부자와 거지 나사로에 관한 구절을 살펴보면서 마무리하고 싶습니다. 누가복음 16장을 보세요: (27) 이르되 그러면 아버지여 구하노니 나사로를 내 아버지의 집에 보내소서 (28) 내 형제 다섯이 있으니 그들에게 증언하게 하여 그들로 이 고통 받는 곳에 오지 않게 하소서 (29) 아브라함이 이르되 그들에게 모세와 선지자들이 있으니 그들에게 들을지어다 (30) 이르되 그렇지 아니하니이다 아버지 아브라함이여 만일 죽은 자에게서 그들에게 가는 자가 있으면 회개하리이다 (31) 이르되 모세와 선지자들에게 듣지 아니하면 비록 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나는 자가 있을지라도 권함을 받지 아니하리라 하였다 하시니라 <br /><br />음부에서 고통받고 있던 부자는 하늘에 있는 나사로가 가족들에게 가면 그들이 회개하고 믿어 구원에 이를 것이라고 생각했습니다. 아브라함은 그에게 '그들이 모세와 선지자들의 말을 듣지 않으면 누군가 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나더라도 믿지 않을 것'이라고 말했습니다.<br /><br />저는 방금 여러분에게 하나님의 말씀을 전했습니다. 그것이 부자에게 필요한 전부이고 형제 자매 여러분, 우리에게 필요한 전부입니다. 딤후 3장 15절은 "또 어려서부터 성경을 알았나니 성경은 능히 너로 하여금 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음으로 말미암아 구원에 이르는 지혜가 있게 하느니라"라고 말씀하고 있습니다.<br /><br />우리가 오늘 들은 그분의 말씀 안에는 구원에 이르는 믿음에 필요한 모든 것이 있습니다. 우리는 더 이상 하나님의 표적이 필요하지 않습니다. 십자가에 못 박히시고 부활하신 구세주의 상처를 볼 필요도 없습니다. 그분은 우리에게 그분의 말씀을 주셨습니다. 그분의 말씀은 예수님이 부활하셨고 500명 이상의 목격자가 있었다고 알려줍니다. 성경은 여러분이 찾을 수 있는 가장 진실한 진리의 원천입니다. 사람의 길은 옳아 보이는 길일 뿐입니다. 이 책은 옳아 보이는 것이 아니라 진리입니다. 우리는 의심을 멈추고 믿기만 하면 됩니다! 예수님은 살아계십니다. 그분의 말씀은 우리에게 그렇게
