Isaiah 9:2-7
A Light Has Dawned
Introduction: A Ruler from Ancient Times (Micah 5:2)
This is the first week of Advent for 2023. Advent is a season of longing for the coming of the Lord. In the Old Testament, God’s people looked forward to their Messiah. But, Israel also did many things that displeased God. Still, their unfaithfulness would not thwart God’s plan to send to them His promised ruler.
Michah 5:2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” Micah was a contemporary of Isaiah. He wrote of the birthplace of Christ some 700 years before it took place. He was the promised eternal king in David’s line. He came as a man but He was a ruler from Ancient times. This speaks of his eternal essence.
Advent is all about God coming to us. Emmanuel! And Peter lets us know this plan was from eternity. ! Peter 1:20 says: “He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. What was Jesus chosen for?” John told us that “He was the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). He is the true gift of Christmas.
On this first Sunday of Advent, we are reflecting on a few Old Testament prophecies that foretold Christ's coming. But, we also should be reminded that just as they looked forward to their coming Messiah, advent also is about longing for the time when He comes again and reigns forever and ever. Let's look at Isaiah 9 starting with verse 2.
1) A Ruler of Light (v.2) “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”
Israel and their kings had done many things to displease God. Isaiah does a good job of revealing their mistakes. He spoke of their rebellion in Chapter 1. He called their offerings worthless. He told them that God didn’t want to hear their prayers. He referred to them as harlots and murderers. There was lots of darkness in the land and in their hearts. The last part of chapter 8 spoke of their darkness associated with seeking spiritualists and mediums.
In Isaiah 9:1 it says: “Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—” Isaiah spoke many prophecies on doom and gloom and judgment. He called for repentance, But, verse 1 of chapter 9 starts with “nevertheless”. Isaiah didn’t just speak doom and gloom. He also spoke of future restoration. He spoke about hope that would bring light into darkness. This ruler of light he is speaking of is Jesus. This also is over 700 years before Christ came.
Let’s look at Matthew 4:12-17. 12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah: 15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— 16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” 17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
In the Bible, light often refers to life, righteousness, truth and hope. Just as Isaiah foretold, Jesus became the light that would bring this life, truth, righteousness and hope. The people walking in darkness and living in the land of deep darkness had to do with the manifestation of their sins. That’s why in verse 17, it says Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This same ruler of ancient times has come to us today, calling us to come out of the darkness to Him (the light) by way of repentance.
2) A Ruler to Rejoice For (v.3-5) 3 You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder. 4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. 5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire.
Isaiah foretold of a ruler to rejoice for. In verse 3, it says: “You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy” There is a promise back in Genesis 17:5 to Abram when his name was changed. Let’s look at that. “No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.” In other words, the people of Israel will mysteriously become many nations. The gospel comes to fulfill this through the gentiles.
Jesus says in John 10:16. “I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.” This is the enlargement of the nation or the multiplying of the nation. This ruler Isaiah spoke of would bring great rejoicing. Isaiah compares it to the joy of those at harvest and warriors dividing the plunder after a victorious battle. So, it is like a joy of abundance and a joy of victory that this ruler will bring. Isaiah had compared the victory this ruler would provide to the day of Midian’s defeat. He said: you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. This ruler would destroy all of the weapons of the enemy. Just as it was God that gave Gideon a miraculous victory over the Midianites, He would shatter the yoke of bondage brought on by sin.
Look at verse 5:5. Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. This is kind of like being more than conquerors that Paul spoke of in Romans 8:35-37. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long;we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
The devices the enemy uses against us will actually be beneficial for us just as fuel benefits the fire. Persecution against the church only strengthens it. It was the extreme persecution of Christ that removed the sting of death and opened the passageway for God’s family to multiply.
3) A Ruler of Peace (v.6-7) 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
We have seen that God promises through Isaiah that there would be a movement from gloom to glory for His people. How? 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. This child is why we celebrate Christmas. We call Him Jesus. Isaiah gives this governor four names in verse 6.
First He names Him Wonderful Counselor. Isaiah 28:29 (NASB) says: This also comes from the Lord of armies, Who has made His counsel wonderful and His wisdom great. God is wise because His counsel comes from His will. He doesn’t need any help from us, We need help from Him. Psalm 32:8 says: I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
The second name Isaiah gives Him in verse 6 is Mighty God. Hebrews 1:3 says: The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. He upholds the universe by the word of His power.
The third name Isaiah gives this governor (which is Jesus) is Everlasting Father. Now, people sometimes get confused when they hear Jesus described as the Everlasting Father. We think of the Trinity and think Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Isaiah does not mean He is God the Father. Through His sacrificial death, Jesus would produce a family of believers. So, He is like a father in that sense. Also, in the sense that a father cares for his children. Isaiah 53:10 speaks of Jesus this way: Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. We can see the likeness of a father in that text.
The last name Isaiah gives this governor is Prince of Peace. Again, let’s go to Isaiah 53 to read more about this peace. Look at verse 5: But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. There are currently 32 countries in conflict in the world. All of these wars begin in the hearts of certain people. Everyone that does not know Christ has conflict in his heart against God, Jesus said in John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” This is the peace that comes from the Prince of Peace. It’s a ‘now and forever peace’.
Isaiah 9:7 says: “Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”
The Prince of Peace Isaiah spoke of has come to us. He called us to come to Him. He will come again to usher in this peace with no end. In Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus said: 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
In this season of Advent, I ask, do you need rest for your soul? The Wonderful Counselor calls us as His Word speaks. The Mighty God has the power to raise us from our spiritual deadness. The Everlasting Father brought us into His family by His sacrificial work on the cross. The Prince of Peace can give rest to your soul.
Conclusion - Your King Comes to You (Zechariah 9:9)
“Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
God planned before the foundation of the world for Jesus to come to us. In Genesis 3, right after the fall, God revealed One would come to crush the head of the serpent Satan. The Old Testament is full of prophetic announcements of the coming of Christ. Zechariah announced that your king comes to you. Jesus came to us from heaven into a manger. He later came into Jerusalem lowly riding on a donkey to offer Himself for us. Today, your King comes to you. Have you come to Him? If not, what are you holding on to?

서론: 상고의 통치자 (미가 5:2)
이번 주는 2023년 대강절의 첫 주입니다. 대강절은 주님의 오심을 기다리는 절기입니다. 구약성경에서 하나님의 백성들은 메시아를 고대했습니다. 하지만 이스라엘도 하나님을 불쾌하게 하는 많은 일을 저질렀습니다. 하지만 그들의 불충실함 때문에 약속하신 통치자를 보내시려는 하나님의 계획이 좌절되지는 않았습니다.
미가 5:2은 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “베들레헴 에브라다야 너는 유다 족속 중에 작을지라도 이스라엘을 다스릴 자가 네게서 내게로 나올 것이라 그의 근본은 상고에, 영원에 있느니라” 미가는 이사야와 동시대 사람이었습니다. 그는 그리스도의 탄생이 일어나기 약 700년 전에 예언을 썼습니다. 그리스도는 다윗의 대를 잇는 약속된 영원한 왕이었습니다. 그리스도는 사람으로 오셨지만, 상고부터 통치자였습니다. 이 예언은 그분의 영원한 본질을 말해줍니다.
대강절은 하나님이 우리에게 오시는 날에 관한 것입니다. 임마누엘! 그리고 베드로는 이 계획이 영원 전부터 있었다는 것을 알려줍니다! 베드로전서 1:20은 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “그는 창세 전부터 미리 알린 바 되신 이나 이 말세에 너희를 위하여 나타내신 바 되었으니” 사도 요한은 우리에게 “세상 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린 양이로다”라고 말씀하였습니다.
대강절 첫 주일에 우리는 그리스도의 오심을 예언한 구약성경의 몇 가지 예언을 묵상하고자 합니다. 그러나 구약의 성도들이 오실 메시아를 고대했던 것처럼, 대강절은 그분이 다시 오셔서 영원토록 통치하실 때를 갈망하는 것임을 상기해야 합니다. 2절부터 이사야 9장을 살펴봅시다.
1) 빛의 통치자 (2)
“흑암에 행하던 백성이 큰 빛을 보고 사망의 그늘진 땅에 거주하던 자에게 빛이 비치도다”
이스라엘과 그들의 왕들은 하나님을 불쾌하게 하는 많은 일을 저질렀습니다. 이사야는 그들의 실수를 잘 드러냅니다. 그는 1장에서 그들의 반역에 대하여 이야기했습니다. 그는 그들의 희생제물을 무가치하다고 말했습니다. 그는 하나님이 그들의 기도를 듣고 싶어 하지 않는다고 말했습니다. 그는 그들을 창녀와 살인자라고 불렀습니다. 그 땅과 그들의 마음에는 어둠이 가득했습니다. 8장의 마지막 부분에서는 영매와 영매를 찾는 것과 관련된 그들의 어둠에 대해 이야기합니다.

마태복음 4:12-17을 봅시다. 12 예수께서 요한이 잡혔음을 들으시고 갈릴로 물러가셨다가 13 나사렛을 떠나 스불론과 납달리 지경 해변에 있는 가버나움에 가서 사시니 14 이는 선지자 이사야를 통하여 하신 말씀을 이루려 하심이라 일렀으되 15 스불론 땅과 납달리 땅과 요단 강 저편 해변 길과 이방의 갈릴리여 16 흑암에 앉은 백성이 큰 빛을 보았고 사망의 땅과 그늘에 앉은 자들에게 빛이 비치었도다 하였느니라 17 이때부터 예수께서 비로소 전파여 이르시되 회개하라 천국이 가까이 왔느니라 하시더라
성경에서 빛은 종종 생명, 의로움, 진리, 희망을 의미합니다. 이사야가 예언한 대로 예수님은 이 생명, 진리, 의로움, 희망을 가져다주는 빛이 되셨습니다. 사람들이 어둠 속에서 걷고 깊은 어둠의 땅에서 사는 것은 그들의 죄가 드러난 것과 관련이 있습니다. 그래서 17절에 예수님께서 "회개하라 천국이 가까이 왔느니라"라고 설교하기 시작했다고 기록되어 있습니다. 상고의 통치자셨던 이분이 오늘날 우리에게도 오셔서 회개를 통해 어둠에서 빛이신 그분께로 나오라고 부르십니다.
2) 기쁨을 주는 통치자 (3-5)
3 주께서 이 나라를 창성하게 하시며 그 즐거움을 더하게 하셨으므로 추수하는 즐거움과 탈취물을 나눌 때의 즐거움 같이 그들이 주 앞에서 즐거워하오니 4 이는 그들이 무겁게 멘 멍에와 그들의 어깨의 채찍과 그 압제자의 막대기를 주께서 꺾으시되 미디안의 날과 같이 하셨음이니이다 5 어지러이 싸우는 군인들의 신과 피 묻은 겉옷이 불에 섶 같이 살라지리니
이사야는 기쁨을 주실 통치자에 대해 예언했습니다. 3절에 이렇게 적혀 있습니다: "주께서 이 나라를 창성하게 하시며 그 즐거움을 더하게 하셨으므로" 창세기 17장 5절에는 아브람의 이름이 바뀔 때 약속이 있습니다. 그 약속을 살펴봅시다. "이제 후로는 네 이름을 아브람이라 하지 아니하고 아브라함이라 하리니 이는 내가 너를 여러 민족의 아버지가 되게 함이니라" 다시 말해, 이스라엘 백성들은 신비롭게도 많은 민족이 될 것입니다. 복음은 이방인을 통해 이를 성취하기 위해 온 것입니다.
예수께서는 요한복음 10:16에서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “또 이 우리에 들지 아니한 다른 양들도 내게 있어 내가 인도하여야 할 터이니 그들도 내 음성을 듣고 한 무리가 되어 한 목자에게 있으리라” 이것이 바로 국가의 확장 또는 국가의 번성입니다. 이사야가 말한 이 통치자는 큰 기쁨을 가져다줄 것입니다. 이사야는 그것을 추수하는 사람들의 기쁨과 전투에서 승리한 후 전리품을 나누는 전사들의 기쁨에 비유합니다. 즉, 이 통치자가 가져올 풍요의 기쁨과 승리의 기쁨을 비유한 것입니다. 이사야는 이 통치자가 가져다줄 승리를 미디안이 패망한 날에 비유했습니다. 그는 이렇게 말했습니다. “이는 그들이 무겁게 멘 멍에와 그들의 어깨의 채찍과 그 압제자의 막대기를 주께서 꺾으시되 미디안의 날과 같이 하셨음이니이다” 기드온이 미디안을 상대로 기적적인 승리를 거둔 것처럼, 하나님께서는 죄로 인한 속박의 멍에를 부수실 것입니다.
5장 5절을 보세요. “어지러이 싸우는 군인들의 신과 피 묻은 겉옷이 불에 섶 같이 살라지리니” 이것은 바울이 로마서 8장 35~37절에서 말한 정복자 이상의 존재가 되는 것과 비슷합니다. 35 누가 우리를 그리스도의 사랑에서 끊으리요 환난이나 곤고나 박해나 기근이나 적신이나 위험이나 칼이랴 36 기록된바 우리가 종일 주를 위하여 죽임을 당하게 되며 도살당할 양 같이 여김을 받았나이다 함과 같으니라 37 그러나 이 모든 일에 우리를 사랑하시는 이로 말미암아 우리가 넉넉히 이기느니라
연료가 불을 지피는 데 도움이 되는 것처럼, 적이 우리를 공격하는 수단은 오히려 우리에게 유익할 것입니다. 교회에 대한 박해는 교회를 강하게 할 뿐입니다. 그리스도에 대한 극심한 박해는 죽음의 독을 제거하고 하나님의 가족이 번성할 수 있는 통로를 열어주었습니다.
3) 평화의 통치자 (6-7)
6 이는 한 아기가 우리에게 났고 한 아들을 우리에게 주신 바 되었는데 그의 어깨에는 정사를 매었고 그의 이름은 기묘자라, 모사라, 전능하신 하나님이라, 영존하시는 아버지라, 평강의 왕이라 할 것임이라 7 그 정사와 평강의 더함이 무궁하며 또 다윗의 왕좌와 그의 나라에 군림하여 그 나라를 굳게 세우고 지금 이후로 영원히 정의와 공의로 그것을 보존하실 것이라 만군의 여호와의 열심이 이를 이루시리라
우리는 하나님께서 이사야를 통해 그분의 백성에게 어둠에서 영광으로 나아가는 움직임이 있을 것이라고 약속하신 것을 보았습니다. 어떻게? 6 “이는 한 아기가 우리에게 났고 한 아들을 우리에게 주신 바 되었는데 그의 어깨에는 정사를 매었고” 이 아이가 바로 우리가 크리스마스를 축하하는 이유입니다. 우리는 그를 예수라고 부릅니다. 이사야는 6절에서 이 통치자에게 네 가지 이름을 부여합니다.
먼저 그분을 훌륭한 상담자라고 부릅니다. 이사야 28:29(NASB)은 이렇게 말합니다: “이 또한 만군의 여호와께서 그분의 모략을 훌륭하게 하시고 그분의 지혜를 위대하게 하셨기 때문입니다.” 하나님은 지혜로우신데, 그분의 조언은 그분의 뜻에서 나오기 때문입니다. 그분은 우리의 도움이 필요하지 않고 우리가 그분의 도움이 필요합니다. 시편 32편 8절은 이렇게 말씀합니다: “내가 네 갈 길을 가르쳐 보이고 너를 주목하여 훈계하리로다”
이사야가 6절에서 그 아기께 붙인 두 번째 이름은 전능하신 하나님입니다. 히브리서 1장 3절은 이렇게 말합니다: “이는 하나님의 영광의 광채시오 그 본체의 형상이시라 그의 능력의 말씀으로 만물을 붙드시며 죄를 정결하게 하는 일을 하시고 높은 곳에 계신 지극히 크신 이의 우편에 앉으셨느니라”
이사야가 이 통치자(예수)께 붙인 세 번째 이름은 '영존하시는 아버지'입니다. 사람들은 때때로 예수님을 영존하시는 아버지로 묘사하는 말을 들으면 혼란스러워합니다. 우리는 삼위일체를 생각하며 성부, 성자, 성령을 생각하죠. 이사야는 그분이 아버지 하나님이시라는 뜻이 아닙니다. 예수님은 희생적인 죽음을 통해 신자 가족을 낳으실 것입니다. 그래서 그분은 그런 의미에서 아버지와 같습니다. 또한 아버지가 자녀를 돌본다는 의미에서도 그렇습니다. 이사야 53장 10절은 예수님에 대해 이렇게 말합니다: “여호와께서 그에게 상함을 받게 하시기를 원하사 질고를 당하게 하셨은즉 그의 영혼을 속건제물로 드리기에 이르면 그가 씨를 보게 되며 그의 날은 길 것이요 또 그의 손으로 여호오께서 기뻐하시는 뜻을 성취하리로다” 이 본문에서 우리는 아버지의 모습을 볼 수 있습니다.
이사야가 이 통치자에게 부여한 마지막 이름은 평화의 왕입니다. 다시 이 평화에 대해 자세히 알아보기 위해 이사야 53장으로 가보겠습니다. 5절을 보세요: “그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악 때문이라 그가 징계를 받음으로 우리는 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞음으로 우리는 나음을 받았도다” 현재 세계에는 32개국이 분쟁 중입니다. 이 모든 전쟁은 특정 사람들의 마음에서 시작됩니다. 예수님은 요한복음 14장 27절에서 "평안을 너희에게 끼치노니 곧 나의 평안을 너희에게 주노라 내가 너희에게 주는 것은 세상이 주는 것과 같지 아니하니라 너희는 마음에 근심하지도 말고 두려워하지도 말라"라고 하셨습니다. 이것이 바로 평화의 왕이 주시는 평화입니다. '이제부터 영원한 평화'입니다.
이사야 9:7은 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “그 정사와 평강의 더함이 무궁하며 또 다윗의 왕좌와 그의 나라에 군림하여 그 나라를 굳게 세우고 지금 이후로 영원히 정의와 공의로 그것을 보존하실 것이라 만군의 여호와의 열심이 이를 이루시리라”
이사야가 말한 평화의 왕이 우리에게 오셨습니다. 그분은 우리를 그분께로 오라고 부르셨습니다. 그분은 이 평화를 끝없이 이어가기 위해 다시 오실 것입니다. 마태복음 11장 28~30절에서 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다: 28 수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들아 다 내게로 오라 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라 29 나는 마음이 온유하고 겸손하니 나의 멍에를 메고 내게 배우라 그리하면 너희 마음이 쉼을 얻으리니 30 이는 내 멍에는 쉽고 내 짐은 가벼움이라 하시니라
이 대강절에 여러분의 영혼에 쉼이 필요하신가요? 위대하신 상담자께서 그분의 말씀대로 우리를 부르십니다. 전능하신 하나님께서는 우리를 영적 죽음에서 살리실 수 있는 능력이 있습니다. 영원하신 아버지께서는 십자가의 희생적인 사역으로 우리를 그분의 가족으로 인도하셨습니다. 평화의 왕은 여러분의 영혼에 안식을 주실 수 있습니다.
결론 - 네 왕이 네게 임하신다 (스가랴 9:9)
“시온의 딸아 크게 기뻐할지어다 예루살렘의 딸아 즐거이 부를지어다 보라 네 왕이 네게 임하시나니 그는 공의로우시며 구원을 베푸시며 겸손하여서 나귀를 타시나니 나귀의 작은 것 곧 나귀 새끼니라”
