Galatians 5:13-15
Understanding Our Freedom
Introduction -“No to Ungodliness”
Up until today’s text, Paul has given all of his attention to fight against the teaching of the legalistic Judaizers. But sometimes people use their freedom to go to another extreme. He addresses that in our text. There is only one true freedom in the Christian faith. That faith is centered on Christ. That faith gives us a sure hope for our future. That hope is also accompanied by love that God’s Spirit pours out in our hearts. That love that is poured out in our hearts will manifest a life of true Christian freedom.
Two extreme counterfeits found in Christianity are first, the legalism we have been seeing in Galatians in the Judaizers. On the other end of the spectrum would be license, libertinism, or antinomianism. This polar opposite of legalism is thinking that Christian freedom gives us the license to sin. It is using grace as an opportunity to indulge the flesh. It is to say by sinning, I can show others God’s grace keeps forgiving. It is to say I have no obligation to observe the moral law. Legalism and license. Both extremes are wrong, and both result when our faith is wrong.
Titus 2:11-12 tells us: 11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, God’s grace appears and offers salvation to all people.
When God’s grace is the source, it teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions. And Paul says that God’s grace teaches us to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives. His Spirit enables us to do what our flesh can’t. The legalist thinks he can attain righteousness by performance. He thinks he is able. The antinomian doesn’t worry about performance or being able. But, he has no self-control, uprightness and godliness in his life because he continues to practice sin.
Today, Paul will give us a clear and practical understanding of our Christian freedom. In verse 13-15, Paul gives us four purposes of God’s call for us to freedom. As we look at these, it will give us a clearer understanding of our Christian freedom.
4 Purposes of God’s Call for Us to Freedom
Purpose #1 (v. 13a) To Oppose the Flesh
13a You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh;
Paul reminds the Galatians that they were called to be free. Some Bible commentators said that the legalist Judaizers were accusing Paul of being an antinomian. Pastor Choi pointed out last week that Paul was persecuted because he preached the gospel of Christianity which is faith in Christ alone. Paul never ever preached that our freedom permits us to indulge the flesh.
In Romans 6:1-4, it is clear that Paul does not teach grace as freedom to sin: 6 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
God’s grace doesn’t save a believer and then leave them. His Holy Spirit comes and dwells in the believer. Because of this, the believer is enabled to live a self-controlled, upright and godly life. His love is in us. We love Him because He loved us. Our love for Him is manifest in our love for each other. Grace continues in sanctifying us and therefore, we don’t go on practicing sin in our lives. We died to sin. We were buried. We were raised. We were raised to a new life. New, meaning ‘not the same as before’. New, meaning ‘a new power in control.’ New, meaning ‘new hearts, new minds, new wills, new emotions, new words from our mouth, new love for each other.’ New life!
So, our freedom doesn’t mean we indulge the flesh by any means whatsoever. It does mean that we oppose the flesh. It does mean we desire to live a life that pleases God. In 1 Peter 1:3 says:3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. So, God’s first purpose in His call for us to freedom is to oppose the flesh. We will look at the latter part of verse 13 for the second purpose.
Purpose #2 (v.13b) - To Serve Others
13b rather, serve one another humbly in love.
The second purpose of God’s call for us to freedom is to serve others. Paul said: serve one another humbly in love. When we don’t know Christ, we primarily are only concerned about what is best for us. We use the freedom we have to fulfill our desires. We think we are free, but as long as they are prisoners of sin, we will never be free. The covenant relationship in Christ frees us from ourselves and wills us to serve others.
It mirrors that of Christ that Paul told us of in Philippians 2:1-4 which says: 1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. When we don’t know Jesus, we live for ourselves.
Even those who do charity works outside of faith in Christ are doing so with different motives than the love of a Christian. When we serve others in our freedom, our motive is to show God’s love and to give them the same love we received. The love of a Christian brings love to others that no one else can bring. We are reminded in Mark 10:45:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Purpose #3 (v.14) - To Fulfill God’s Moral Law
14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
The third purpose of God’s call for us to freedom is to fulfill his moral law. In verse 13, Paul said: serve one another humbly in love. So, after opposing the flesh and serving others in love, Paul tells us that God’s call for us to freedom is a call to love our neighbor as ourselves. In Romans 13:8, Paul says: 8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. Christian freedom calls us to treat others like we want to be treated ourselves. This love is genuine.
It is an act of the will. It is seeing a need in our brothers and sisters and others. It is responding with intent to meet that need if we are able. God gave us His Holy Spirit which rightly motivates us and empowers us to fulfill the moral law. 1 Peter 4 says: 8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. We can do all kinds of charitable deeds, but without love it profits us nothing.
Purpose #4 (v.15) - To Avoid Harming Others
15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
The 4th purpose in God calling us to freedom is to avoid harming others. Biting and devouring each other is equal to wild animals engaged in the fury of a deadly struggle. This is evident in our world in many forms, but it has no place in God’s church. To avoid harming others, we have to exercise self-control. 1 John 2:6 tells us:6 the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. This is a self-denying walk.
Look at Matthew 16:24: 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. In our freedom, we value unity over strife. This means sometimes we need to accept that things aren’t always going to go the way we would like them to go. Ephesians 4:3 tells us: 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. When we are free, God’s Spirit does a great humbling work in us.
Conclusion - “I live by Faith” (Gal. 2:20)
As we close trying to understand what our Christian freedom is, I hope we can remember these 4 purposes that God calls us into freedom for. Unlike both the legalist and the antinomian, Christian freedom calls us to oppose the flesh. Both counterfeit extremes are wrong and both are sourced by the flesh. One flesh tries to justify itself by merit and the other flesh uses grace as license to keep sinning. Christian freedom calls us to serve one another in love and to fulfill the moral law by loving our neighbor as ourselves. God enables us to do that by His Spirit. And God calls us to freedom to avoid harming others. It is a wonderful humbling work that blesses us and others. All of these purposes are selfless. To be selfless is to be like Christ, To be selfless is to be a Christian. It requires one to live by faith, not works. Galatians 2:20 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. May we all understand our freedom and live in this freedom for the glory of God.

Understanding Our Freedom 우리의 자유를 이해함
도입 - “경건하지 않은 것을 버림”
오늘 본문까지 바울은 율법주의 유대주의자들의 가르침에 맞서 싸우는 데 온 힘을 쏟았습니다. 그러나 때때로 사람들은 자유를 이용해 또 다른 극단으로 나아갈 때가 있습니다. 바울은 오늘 본문에서 이에 대해 언급합니다. 기독교 신앙에는 오직 하나의 진정한 자유가 있습니다. 그 신앙은 그리스도를 중심으로 합니다. 그 믿음은 우리에게 미래에 대한 확실한 희망을 줍니다. 그 희망은 또한 하나님의 영이 우리 마음에 부어주시는 사랑을 동반합니다. 우리 마음에 부어지는 그 사랑은 진정한 그리스도인 자유의 삶을 드러낼 것입니다.
기독교에서 발견되는 두 가지 극단적인 모조품은 첫째, 갈라디아서에서 볼 수 있는 유대주의자들의 율법주의입니다. 다른 쪽 끝에는 면벌부, 자유주의 또는 율법폐기론이 있습니다. 율법주의의 정반대 개념인 자유주의는 그리스도인의 자유가 우리에게 죄에 대한 면허를 준다고 생각하는 것입니다. 은혜를 죄의 본성대로 탐닉할 기회로 삼는 것입니다. 죄를 지음으로써 다른 사람들에게 하나님의 은혜가 계속 용서한다는 것을 보여줄 수 있다고 말하는 것입니다. 그것은 내가 도덕법을 지킬 의무가 없다고 말하는 것입니다. 율법주의와 면벌부. 두 극단 모두 잘못되었으며, 둘 다 우리의 믿음이 잘못되었을 때 발생합니다.
디도서 2:11-12는 우리에게 이렇게 말씀합니다. “11 모든 사람에게 구원을 주시는 하나님의 은혜가 나타나 12 우리를 양육하시되 경건하지 않은 것과 이 세상의 정욕을 다 버리고 신중함과 의로움과 경건함으로 이 세상에 살고”
하나님의 은혜가 원천일 때, 은혜는 우리에게 경건하지 않은 것과 세상적인 정욕에 대해 “아니오”라고 말하도록 가르칩니다. 그리고 바울은 하나님의 은혜가 우리에게 자제력 있고 정직하며 경건한 삶을 살도록 가르친다고 말합니다. 그분의 영은 우리 육신이 할 수 없는 일을 할 수 있게 해줍니다. 율법주의자는 행위로 의를 얻을 수 있다고 생각합니다. 그는 자신이 할 수 있다고 생각합니다. 율법폐기론자는 성과나 능력에 대해 걱정하지 않습니다. 그러나 그는 계속 죄를 행하기 때문에 삶에서 자제력, 정직함, 경건함이 없습니다.
오늘 바울은 그리스도인의 자유에 대해 명확하고 실제적인 이해를 제공합니다. 13~15절에서 바울은 하나님께서 우리를 자유로 부르신 네 가지 목적을 제시합니다. 이를 살펴보면 그리스도인의 자유에 대해 더 명확하게 이해할 수 있을 것입니다.
우리를 자유로 부르신 하나님의 네 가지 목적
목적 #1 (13절a) 육체를 기회로 삼지 않기
13a 형제들아 너희가 자유를 위하여 부르심을 입었으나 그러나 그 자유로 육체의 기회를 삼지 말고
바울은 갈라디아 교인들에게 그들이 자유를 위해 부름 받았다는 사실을 상기시킵니다. 일부 성경 주석가는 율법주의 유대주의자들이 바울을 율법폐기론자라고 비난한다고 말했습니다. 최 목사는 지난주에 바울이 핍박을 받은 것은 그리스도만을 믿는 기독교의 복음을 전했기 때문이라고 지적한 바 있습니다. 바울은 우리의 자유가 죄의 본성대로 탐닉하도록 허용한다고 설교한 적이 없습니다.
로마서 6장 1~4절에서 바울은 은혜를 죄에 대한 자유로 가르치지 않는다고 분명히 밝히고 있습니다. “1 그런즉 우리가 무슨 말을 하리요 은혜를 더하게 하려고 죄에 거하겠느냐 2 그럴 수 없느니라 죄에 대하여 죽은 우리가 어찌 그 가운데 더 살리요 3 무릇 그리스도 예수와 합하여 침례를 받은 우리는 그의 죽으심과 합하여 침례를 받은 줄을 알지 못하느냐 4 그러므로 우리가 그의 죽으심과 합하여 침례를 받음으로 그와 함께 장사되었나니 이는 아버지의 영광으로 말미암아 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리심과 같이 우리로 또한 새 생명 가운데서 행하게 하려 하려 함이라”
하나님의 은혜는 신자를 구원하고 떠나는 것이 아닙니다. 그분의 성령이 오셔서 신자 안에 거하십니다. 이 때문에 신자는 자제력 있고 정직하며 경건한 삶을 살 수 있습니다. 그분의 사랑이 우리 안에 있습니다. 그분이 우리를 사랑하셨기 때문에 우리는 그분을 사랑합니다. 그분에 대한 우리의 사랑은 서로에 대한 우리의 사랑에서 나타납니다. 은혜는 우리를 거룩하게 하는 데 계속 작용하므로 우리는 삶에서 죄를 계속 범하지 않습니다. 우리는 죄에 대해 죽었습니다. 우리는 장사되었습니다. 우리는 부활했습니다. 우리는 새로운 생명으로 살아났습니다. 새롭다는 것은 '이전과 같지 않다'라는 뜻입니다. 새롭다는 뜻은 '새로운 힘의 지배'를 의미합니다. 새롭다는 것은 '새로운 마음, 새로운 정신, 새로운 의지, 새로운 감정, 우리의 입에서 나오는 새로운 말, 서로에 대한 새로운 사랑'을 의미합니다. 새로운 삶!
따라서 우리의 자유는 우리가 어떤 수단으로든 죄의 본성을 따라 탐닉한다는 의미가 아닙니다. 그것은 우리가 죄의 본성에 저항한다는 것을 의미합니다. 그것은 우리가 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 삶을 살기를 원한다는 것을 의미합니다. 베드로전서 1장 3절은 다음과 같이 말합니다. “3 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지 하나님을 찬송하리로다 그의 많으신 긍휼대로 예수 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 부활하게 하심으로 말미암아 우리를 거듭나게 하사 산 소망이 있게 하시고” 그의 신성한 능력은 그분의 영광과 선하심으로 우리를 부르신 분을 아는 지식을 통해 경건한 삶에 필요한 모든 것을 우리에게 주셨습니다. 따라서 우리를 자유로 부르신 하나님의 첫 번째 목적은 죄의 본성을 대적하는 것입니다. 두 번째 목적은 13절 후반부를 살펴볼 것입니다.
목적 #2 (13b) - 서로 섬기기
13b 오직 사랑으로 서로 종노릇하라
하나님께서 우리를 자유로 부르신 두 번째 목적은 다른 사람들을 섬기는 것입니다. 바울은 사랑으로 겸손하게 서로를 섬기라고 말했습니다. 그리스도를 모를 때 우리는 주로 자신에게 가장 좋은 것이 무엇인지에만 관심 갖습니다. 우리는 우리의 욕망을 채우기 위해 우리가 가진 자유를 사용합니다. 우리는 자유롭다고 생각하지만, 죄의 포로가 되어있는 한 결코 자유로울 수 없습니다. 그리스도 안에서의 언약 관계는 우리를 우리 자신으로부터 자유롭게 하고 다른 사람을 섬기도록 합니다.
이는 빌립보서 2:1-4에서 바울이 말한 그리스도의 모습과 유사합니다. “1 그러므로 그리스도 안에 무슨 권면이나 사랑의 무슨 위로나 성령의 무슨 교제나 긍휼이나 자비가 있거든 1 마음을 같이하여 같은 사랑을 가지고 뜻을 합하며 한마음을 품어 3 아무 일에든지 다툼이나 허영으로 하지 말고 오직 겸손한 마음으로 각각 자기보다 남을 낫게 여기고 4 각각 자기 일을 돌볼뿐더러 또한 각각 다른 사람들의 일을 돌보아 나의 기쁨을 충만하게 하라”
그리스도를 믿지 않고 자선 활동을 하는 사람들도 그리스도인의 사랑과는 다른 동기로 자선 활동을 하는 것입니다. 우리가 자유 속에서 다른 사람을 섬길 때 우리의 동기는 하나님의 사랑을 보여주고 우리가 받은 것과 같은 사랑을 그들에게 주기 위해서입니다. 그리스도인의 사랑은 다른 누구도 가져다줄 수 없는 사랑을 다른 사람에게 가져다줍니다. 우리는 마가복음 10장 45절을 떠올리게 됩니다. “45 인자가 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함이니라”
목적 #3 (14) - 하나님의 윤리적 율법을 이루기
14 온 율법은 네 이웃 사랑하기를 네 자신 같이 하라 하신 한 말씀에서 이루어졌나니
하나님께서 우리를 자유로 부르시는 세 번째 목적은 하나님의 도덕법을 성취하는 것입니다. 13절에서 바울은 사랑으로 겸손히 서로를 섬기라고 말했습니다. 따라서 바울은 죄의 본성을 거스르고 사랑으로 다른 사람을 섬긴 다음, 우리를 자유로 부르신 하나님의 부르심은 이웃을 내 몸과 같이 사랑하라는 부르심이라고 말합니다. 로마서 13장 8절에서 바울은 다음과 같이 말씀합니다. “8 피차 사랑의 빚 외에는 아무에게든지 아무 빚도 지지 말라 남을 사랑하는 자는 율법을 다 이루었느니라” 그리스도인의 자유는 우리 자신이 대접받고 싶은 대로 다른 사람을 대하라고 요구합니다. 이 사랑은 진실합니다.
그것은 의지의 행위입니다. 그것은 우리 형제자매와 다른 사람들의 필요를 보는 것입니다. 우리가 할 수 있다면 그 필요를 충족시키려는 의도로 반응하는 것입니다. 하나님께서는 우리에게 성령을 주셨고, 그분은 우리에게 올바른 동기를 부여하고 도덕법을 성취하는 힘을 주십니다. 베드로전서 4장 8절은 이렇게 말합니다. “8 무엇보다도 뜨겁게 서로 사랑할지니 사랑은 허다한 죄를 덮느니라” 우리는 모든 종류의 자선 행위를 할 수 있지만 사랑이 없으면 아무 유익이 없습니다.
목적 #4 (15) - 서로 해하지 않기
15 만일 서로 물고 먹으면 피차 멸망할까 조심하라
하나님께서 우리를 자유로 부르신 네 번째 목적은 다른 사람에게 해를 끼치지 않는 것입니다. 서로 물고 뜯어먹는 행위는 야생 동물이 맹렬하게 사투를 벌이는 것과 같습니다. 이것은 세상에서는 여러 가지 형태로 나타나지만, 하나님의 교회에서는 있을 수 없는 일입니다. 다른 사람에게 해를 끼치지 않으려면 자제력을 발휘해야 합니다. 요한일서 2장 6절은 다음과 같이 말합니다. “6 그의 안에서 산다고 하는 자는 그가 행하시는 대로 자기도 행할지니라”
마태복음 16:24을 봅시다 “24 이에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 누구든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라” 우리는 자유 속에서 분쟁보다 단합을 중요하게 생각합니다. 이는 때때로 우리가 원하는 대로 일이 진행되지 않을 수도 있다는 사실을 인정해야 한다는 뜻입니다. 에베소서 4:3은 우리에게 말씀하십니다. “3 평안의 매는 줄로 성령이 하나 되게 하신 것을 힘써 지키라” 우리가 자유로울 때 하나님의 영은 우리 안에서 우리를 겸손하게 만드는 위대한 일을 하십니다.
결론 – “나는 믿음으로 사노라” (갈 2:20)
그리스도인의 자유가 무엇인지 이해하려고 노력하면서, 하나님께서 우리를 자유로 부르신 이 네 가지 목적을 기억할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 율법주의자나 율법폐기론자와 달리 그리스도인의 자유는 죄의 본성에 반대하도록 우리를 부릅니다. 두 극단 모두 잘못되었으며 둘 다 죄의 본성에서 비롯됩니다. 한 죄의 본성은 공로로 자신을 정당화하려고 하고, 다른 죄의 본성은 은혜를 계속 죄를 지을 수 있는 면벌부로 사용합니다. 그리스도인의 자유는 사랑으로 서로를 섬기고 이웃을 내 몸과 같이 사랑함으로써 도덕법을 완수하도록 우리를 부릅니다. 하나님께서는 그분의 영으로 우리가 그렇게 할 수 있게 하십니다. 그리고 하나님은 다른 사람에게 해를 끼치지 않도록 우리를 자유로 부르십니다. 그것은 우리와 다른 사람들을 축복하는 놀라운 겸손한 일입니다. 이 모든 목적은 이타적입니다. 이타적인 것은 그리스도를 닮는 것이고, 이타적인 것은 그리스도인이 되는 것입니다. 이타적인 삶을 살기 위해서는 행위가 아닌 믿음으로 살아야 합니다. 갈라디아서 2:20은 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “내가 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못 박혔나니 그런즉 이제는 내가 사는 것이 아니요 오직 내 안에 그리스도께서 사시는 것이라 이제 내가 육체 가운데 사는 것은 나를 사랑하사 나를 위하여 자기 자신을 버리신 하나님의 아들을 믿는 믿음 안에서 사는 것이라”
