Abram’s Lot
Genesis 13:14-18
Introduction: “But Seek First His Kingdom” (Matthew 6:33)
I wrestled with the title of today’s message. I could either call it “Abram’s Portion” or “Abram’s Lot.” Most of you probably realize why I decided on Abram’s Lot. Our theme for this year comes from Genesis 12:2 - “You shall be a Blessing.” As Pastor Choi has pointed out from Stephen’s testimony before the Sanhedrin that Abraham first heard the word of God in Ur of the Chaldeans. After Abram’s father Terah died, Abram moved to Canaan. As God spoke to Abram, He promised that He would bless Abram and that He would be a blessing.
Pastor Choi pointed out the significance of each story in the Bible involving God, land and people. He also told us how Abraham was the central figure in God’s story of salvation. The significance of the word, the altar and the tent in his life are opening up our eyes to how these elements are today alive in the kingdom of God. It appears Abram moved his tent to Egypt without regard to seeking God. Instead of being a witness by the word and the altar, Abram almost gave his wife away intending to spare himself. Instead of being a witness of light to Egypt and the world, he brought shame.
After that, in Genesis 13:4, it tells us he built an altar and called on the name of the Lord. Likely as he worshiped at this time, he repented of his shameful witness in Egypt. Immediately after this he faced a conflict with his nephew Lot as our Pastor shared last week. Abram would take steps forward and sometimes back. Even when he failed, God still watched over him. When Abram did his best is when he sought the Lord and His righteousness. It is the same for us. Abram had every right to choose whatever land he wanted in his conflict with Lot. He was older than Lot. In Gen. 12:7 God promised him the land. But Abram, after going to the altar, gave Lot the first choice. That was the message last week.
Today we look at Abram’s Lot. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” I think Abram was still feeling shame from his witness in Egypt. But, we see that this chapter begins and ends with Abram seeking God. Lot looked at the land before him but Abram had his heart calling on God. Hebrews 11:8-11 tells us this: 8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. 9 By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. Lot moved by sight in this conflict while Abram moved by faith seeking God first and trusting Him. It began with an altar and calling on the name of the Lord in Gen. 13:4. And now look at the answer or “Abram’s Lot”.
1. “Land Forever” (14-15)
14 The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.
15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.”
Abram had finished letting Lot make the first choice and Lot chose the land that looked good to his eyes. Abram gave up his right to have first choice and gave it to the younger Lot. We can see here how Abram mirrored the attributes of Christ. Insisting on our way is the source of all conflicts.
The commonality of Abram and Lot was being family. Instead of bringing conflict to the family, Abram surrendered his rights and also gave a good witness to the Canaanites and Perrezites in the land. As Christians, our commonality is in Christ and we should make every effort for peace, too, when conflict is on the horizon. This is for the well-being of the life of our church and a light that shines before men, a good witness to the world. Being peacemakers is selfless, sacrificial and resembles our Savior.
But, let's look at the text, after the conflict is over, God speaks to Abram. Abram’s portion would essentially be God’s blessing. It started at the altar. He said:“Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. The LORD comes to Abram in his humble posture. Abram is told to look around from where he is and as he does, God promises him that he and his offspring will have it forever. It is very possible Abram was on a high mountain or in such a place he could see for a great distance.
This signifies his right to the land not actual possession. This would happen later. This is the same promise we saw in Genesis 12:7 The LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him. We see God’s plans as He works with man and the land to ultimately build His Kingdom.
2. “Like the Dust of the Earth” (16)
16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.
Abram would have so many offspring, they would be uncountable is what is being said. As we have said, Abraham is a central figure in His salvation story. He is the reference point for building God’s Kingdom. There are countless physical descendents of Abraham, but God’s priority is building an eternal Kingdom. We will again see God appearing to Abram after he exercises faith in defeating an army in Gen. 14-15 and when he offers his son to God in Gen. 22. Sometimes we see God tell him to count the stars in the sky or to count the sand on the seashore, but here, we see it expressed as dust.
The intention is to say: “too many to count.” Abram is blessed and to be a blessing. We have been partakers of the blessing and we are one of the specks of dust, one of the grains of sand and one of the stars in the sky in a sense as God builds his kingdom. Galatians 3:7 Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. 8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” 9 So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. There is more dust, sand and stars to be added to the Kingdom and as Pastor Choi said, “We are the conduit or channel of blessing to build the kingdom. We see in that passage that the gospel is the critical element of all nations being blessed.”
3. “He Built an Altar to the LORD” (17-18)
17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.”
18 So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the LORD.
Before we acquire new property or a new home, we like to walk through and look at it. God tells Abram to walk through the land that He was giving Him. He had no record of ownership of the land but he believed the promise of God that it would be his and he moved through the land. The promise we have today in God’s kingdom can be found in His word. Let’s take time this year to walk through the length and breadth of His Word which he has given to us!
Verse 18 says: So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord. Building and altar once again. Seeking the Lord once again. Pitching his tent once again. At the beginning of this chapter, as I said when Abram built an altar, he likely was repenting of his shameful treatment in regards to Sarah in Egypt. He likely, during this time, asked God to help him be more faithful. Then a conflict that could have made him another bad witness followed. But he gave Lot his choice and in doing so brought peace and blessing for himself and future offspring (physical and spiritual). We need to build our spiritual altars each day. We do this because we are blessed and because we are to be a blessing.
Conclusion: “Value Others Above Yourselves” (Philippians 2:1-11)
When Abram went to the altar and called on God, God was pleased and helped Abram to surrender his rights to Lot to avoid conflict. That act of faith was pleasing to God. He let his light shine before men. He was a city on a hill, a lamp not hidden. His selfless example should remind us that we don’t always have to get our way. God is pleased when we give up our rights for the sake of peace. Just as he blessed Abram we too can be blessed if we walk by faith and not by sight. There is someone else who gave up His right for the sake of others and we will close by reading that:
(Philippians 2:1-6) 2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

아브람의 롯

도입: “너희는 먼저 그의 왕국을 구하라” (마태복음 6:33)
저는 오늘 메시지 제목을 어떻게 정할까를 고민했습니다. “아브람의 몫”이라고 부를 수도 있고 “아브람의 롯”이라고 부를 수도 있습니다. 제가 왜 “아브람의 롯”으로 정했는지 대부분 아실 것입니다. 올해 주제는 창세기 12장 2절의 “너는 복이 될지라”입니다. 최 목사가 스데반의 산헤드린 증언을 통해 아브라함이 갈대아 우르에서 하나님의 말씀을 처음 들었다고 지적하였듯이, 아브라함은 갈대아 우르에서 맨 처음에 하나님의 말씀을 들었습니다. 아브람의 아버지 데라가 하란에서 죽은 후, 아브람은 가나안으로 이주했습니다. 하나님께서는 아브람에게 말씀하시어 아브람에게 복을 주시겠다, 아브람은 복이 될 것이라 약속하셨습니다.
최 목사는 성경에 나오는 모든 이야기는 하나님, 땅, 사람과 관련되어 있음을 짚어주었습니다. 또한 아브라함이 하나님의 구원 이야기에서 어떻게 중심이 되는 인물인지 말씀 해주었습니다. 아브람의 삶에서 말씀, 제단, 장막의 중요성은 오늘날 하나님 왕국에서 이러한 요소들이 어떻게 살아 숨 쉬는지에 대해 우리의 눈을 뜨게 합니다. 아브람은 하나님을 찾는 것과는 무관하게 장막을 이집트로 옮긴 것으로 보입니다. 이집트에서 아브람은 말씀과 제단으로 증인이 되는 대신, 자신을 살리려고 아내를 파라오에게 내어줄 뻔했습니다. 그는 이집트와 세상에 빛의 증인이 되기는커녕 수치를 드러냈습니다.
그 후 창세기 13장 4절에는 그가 제단을 쌓고 여호와의 이름을 불렀다고 기록되어 있습니다. 아마도 이때 아브라함은 예배를 드리면서 이집트에서 부끄럽게 증언한 것을 회개했을 것입니다. 그 직후 아브람은 지난주에 최 목사가 설교한 것처럼 조카 롯과 갈등을 겪게 됩니다. 아브람은 한 걸음씩 앞으로 나아갔다가 때로는 뒤로 물러나기도 했습니다. 그가 실패했을 때도 하나님은 여전히 그를 지켜보셨습니다. 아브람이 최선을 다했을 때는 주님과 그분의 의를 구했을 때입니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 아브람은 롯과 겪은 갈등에서 자신이 원하는 땅을 선택할 모든 권리가 있었습니다. 그는 롯보다 나이가 많았기 때문입니다. 창세기 12장 7절에서 하나님은 아브람에게 땅을 약속하셨습니다. 그러나 아브람은 제단을 쌓고 예배를 드린 후 롯에게 먼저 선택권을 주었습니다. 이것이 지난주 메시지였습니다.
오늘은 아브람의 롯을 살펴봅니다. 마태복음 6장 33절은 “너희는 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 주시리라”라고 말씀합니다. 아브람은 이집트에서의 증언으로 인해 여전히 수치심을 느끼고 있었을 것입니다. 그러나 우리는 이 장의 시작과 끝에서 아브람이 하나님을 찾는 것으로 끝나는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 롯은 눈 앞의 땅을 바라보았지만, 아브람의 마음은 하나님께 간절히 부르짖고 있었습니다. 히브리서 11장 8~11절이 이를 말해줍니다: “8 믿음으로 아브라함은 부르심을 받았을 때에 순종하여 장래에 유업으로 받을 땅에 나아갈새 갈 바를 알지 못하고 나아갔으며 9 믿음으로 그가 이방의 땅에 있는 것 같이 약속의 땅에 거류하여 동일한 약속을 유업으로 함께 받은 이삭과 및 야곱과 더불어 장막에 거하였으니 10 이는 그가 하나님이 계획하시고 지으실 터가 있는 성을 바랐음이라” 이 갈등에서 롯은 눈으로 보고 움직였지만, 아브람은 먼저 하나님을 찾고 신뢰하는 믿음으로 움직였습니다. 그것은 창세기 13장 4절에서 제단을 쌓고 여호와의 이름을 부르는 것으로 시작하였습니다. 이제 그 응답인 “아브람의 롯”을 봅시다.
1. “영원한 땅” (14-15)
14 롯이 아브람을 떠난 후에 여호와께서 아브람에게 이르시되 “너는 눈을 들어 너 있는 곳에서 북쪽과 남쪽 그리고 동쪽과 서쪽을 바라보라
15 보이는 땅을 내가 너와 네 자손에게 주리니 영원히 이르리라”
아브람은 롯에게 먼저 선택권을 주었고, 롯은 자기 눈에 보기에 좋은 땅을 선택했습니다. 아브람은 자신의 우선 선택권을 포기하고 자기보다 젊은 롯에게 땅을 내어주었습니다. 여기서 우리는 아브람이 그리스도의 성품을 어떻게 반영했는지 알 수 있습니다. 내 방식만 고집하는 것은 모든 갈등의 근원입니다.
아브람과 롯의 공통점은 가족이라는 점입니다. 아브람은 가족 간에 갈등을 일으키는 대신 자신의 권리를 포기하고, 또 그 땅의 가나안 족속과 브리스 족속에게 좋은 증언을 보였습니다. 그리스도인으로서 우리의 공통점은 그리스도 안에 있다는 것이며, 갈등이 다가올 때도 평화를 위해 모든 노력을 기울여야 합니다. 이것은 우리 교회 삶의 안녕을 위한 것이며, 사람들 앞에 빛을 비추는 빛, 세상에 대한 좋은 증언이 되기 위한 것입니다. 피스메이커가 되는 것은 이타적이고 희생적이며 우리 구세주를 닮는 삶입니다.
하지만 오늘 본문을 살펴보면, 갈등이 끝난 후 하나님은 아브람에게 말씀하십니다. 아브람의 몫은 본질적으로 하나님의 복이 될 것입니다. 그것은 제단에서 시작되었습니다. "너는 눈을 들어 너 있는 곳에서 북쪽과 남쪽 그리고 동쪽과 서쪽을 바라보라 보이는 땅을 내가 너와 네 자손에게 주리니 영원히 이르리라.” 주님은 낮은 자세로 아브람에게 다가오십니다. 하나님은 아브람에게 자신이 있는 곳에서 주변을 둘러보라고 말씀하시고, 하나님은 그와 그의 자손이 영원히 그 땅을 차지할 것이라고 약속하십니다. 아브람은 높은 산에 있거나 먼 곳까지 볼 수 있는 곳에 있었을 가능성이 큽니다.
이는 토지에 대한 아브람의 실제 소유가 아닌 권리를 의미합니다. 이것은 나중에 일어날 일입니다. 이것은 우리가 창세기 12장 7절에서 본 것과 같은 약속입니다: 여호와께서 아브람에게 나타나셔서 “내가 이 땅을 네 자손에게 주리라”라고 하셨습니다. 그래서 아브람은 자신에게 나타나신 여호와를 위해 그곳에 제단을 쌓았습니다. 우리는 궁극적으로 하나님의 왕국을 건설하기 위해 인간과 땅과 함께 일하시는 하나님의 계획을 봅니다.
2. “땅의 티끌 같은 자손” (16)
16 “내가 네 자손이 땅의 티끌 같게 하리니 사람이 땅의 티끌을 능히 셀 수 있을진대 네 자손도 세리라”
아브람은 자손이 너무 많아서 셀 수 없을 정도로 많은 자손을 낳을 것이라고 말합니다. 앞서 말했듯이 아브라함은 하나님의 구원 이야기에서 중심적인 인물입니다. 그는 하나님의 왕국을 건설하기 위한 기준점입니다. 아브라함의 육체적 후손은 무수히 많지만, 하나님의 우선순위는 영원한 왕국을 건설하는 것입니다. 창세기 14~15장에서 아브람이 믿음을 발휘하여 군대를 물리친 후, 그리고 창세기 22장에서 아들을 하나님께 바칠 때 하나님께서 아브람에게 다시 나타나시는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 하늘의 별을 세어 보라고 하시거나 바닷가의 모래를 세어 보라고 말씀하실 때도 있지만, 여기서는 땅의 먼지로 표현되어 있습니다.
하나님의 의도는 다음과 같이 말씀하는 것입니다: “셀 수 없을 정도로 많으리라.” 아브람은 복 받았고 복이 되었습니다. 우리는 그 복에 참여했으며, 하나님이 그분의 왕국을 건설하는 데 있어 먼지 한 톨, 모래알 한 알, 하늘의 별 중 하나에 불과합니다. 갈라디아서 3장 7절에서 9절 말씀을 봅시다. “7 그런즉 믿음으로 말미암은 자들은 아브라함의 자손인 줄 알지어다 8 또 하나님이 이방을 믿음으로 말미암아 의로 정하실 것을 성경에 미리 알고 먼저 아브라함에게 복음을 전하되 모든 이방인이 너로 말미암아 복을 받으리라 하셨느니라 9 그러므로 믿음으로 말미암은 자는 믿음이 있는 아브라함과 함께 복을 받느니라” 최 목사의 설교처럼 우리는 하나님 왕국을 건설하는 복의 통로, 즉 축복의 통로입니다. 이 구절에서 우리는 복음이 모든 민족이 복을 받는 데 중요한 요소임을 알 수 있습니다.
3. “아브람이 여호와를 위하여 제단을 쌓았더라” (17-18)
17 “너는 일어나 그 땅을 종과 횡으로 두루 다녀 보라 내가 그것을 네게 주리라”
18 이에 아브람이 장막을 옮겨 헤브론에 있는 마므레 상수리 수풀에 이르러 거주하며 거기서 여호와를 위하여 제단을 쌓았더라
우리는 새로운 부동산이나 새로운 집을 구매하기 전에 직접 걸어보며 살펴보는 것을 좋아합니다. 하나님은 아브람에게 하나님이 주신 땅을 걸어보라고 말씀하십니다. 아브람은 그 땅의 소유권은 없었지만, 그 땅이 자기 것이 될 것이라는 하나님의 약속을 믿고 그 땅을 걸어 다녔습니다. 오늘날 우리가 하나님 왕국에서 누리는 약속은 그분의 말씀에서 찾을 수 있습니다. 올해에는 자주 시간을 내어 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 그분 말씀의 길이와 넓이를 따라 걸어가 봅시다!
18절은 이렇게 말씀합니다. “이에 아브람이 장막을 옮겨 헤브론에 있는 마므레 상수리 수풀에 이르러 거주하며 거기서 여호와를 위하여 제단을 쌓았더라” 아브람은 다시 장막을 옮기고 제단을 쌓으며, 다시 주님을 찾습니다. “다시 장막을 옮기고” 이 장 서두에서 아브람이 제단을 쌓을 때, 그는 이집트에서 사라에게 부끄러운 대접을 받도록 한 것을 회개하고 있었을 것입니다. 이 기간, 아브람은 하나님께 자신이 더 신실해질 수 있도록 도와달라고 기도했을 것입니다. 그런 다음 또 다른 나쁜 증인이 될 수도 있었던 갈등이 뒤따랐습니다. 하지만 아브라함은 롯에게 선택권을 주었고, 그렇게 함으로써 자신과 미래의 육체적, 영적 후손에게 평화와 축복을 가져다주었습니다. 우리는 매일 영적인 제단을 쌓아야 합니다. 우리는 복을 받았기 때문에, 그리고 우리가 복이기 때문에 그렇게 해야 합니다.
결론: “각각 자기보다 남을 낫게 여기라” (빌립보서 2:1-11)
아브람이 제단에 나아가 하나님께 부르짖었을 때, 하나님은 기뻐하셨고 아브람이 분쟁을 피하기 위해 롯에게 자신의 권리를 포기하도록 도와주셨습니다. 그 믿음의 행동은 하나님을 기쁘시게 했습니다. 아브람은 자신의 빛을 사람들 앞에 비추었습니다. 그는 언덕 위의 도시였고, 숨겨지지 않는 등불이었습니다. 그의 이타적인 모범은 우리가 항상 내 뜻대로 할 필요가 없음을 일깨워 줍니다. 하나님은 우리가 평화를 위해 우리의 권리를 포기할 때 기뻐하십니다. 아브람을 축복하신 것처럼 우리도 눈으로 보지 않고 믿음으로 행하면 축복을 받을 수 있습니다. 다른 사람들을 위해 자신의 권리를 포기한 또 다른 분이 계신데, 그 이야기를 읽으며 마무리하겠습니다.
빌립보서 2장 1절부터 11절 말씀입니다. 1 그러므로 그리스도 안에 무슨 권면이나 사랑의 무슨 위로나 성령의 무슨 교제나 긍휼이나 자비가 있거든 2 마음을 같이하여 같은 사랑을 가지고 뜻을 합하며 한마음을 품어 3 아무 일에든지 다툼이나 허영으로 하지 말고 오직 겸손한 마음으로 각각 자기보다 남을 낫게 여기고 4 각각 자기 일을 돌볼뿐더러 또한 각각 다른 사람들의 일을 돌보아 나의 기쁨을 충만하게 하라 5 너희 안에 이 마음을 품으라 곧 그리스도 예수의 마음이니 6 그는 근본 하나님의 본체시나 하나님과 동등됨을 취할 것으로 여기지 아니하시고 7 오히려 자기를 비워 종의 형제를 가지사 사람들과 같이 되셨고 8 사람의 모양으로 나타나사 자기를 낮추시고 죽기까지 복종하셨으니 곧 십자가에 죽으심이라 9 이러므로 하나님이 그를 지극히 높여 모든 이름 위에 뛰어난 이름을 주사 10 하늘에 있는 자들과 땅에 있는 자들과 땅 아래에 있는 자들로 모든 무릎을 예수의 이름에 꿇게 하시고 11 모든 입으로 예수 그리스도를 주라 시인하여 하나님 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하셨느니라
