“기쁜 소식” [The Good News]
고린도전서 [1 Corinthians] 15:3-4

워털루 전쟁은 1815년 6월 18일에 있었습니다. 나폴레옹의 지휘 아래 프랑스 군대는 영국의 웰링턴 장군이 이끄는 영국, 네덜란드, 그리고 독일의 연합군과 전쟁을 하고 있었습니다. 당시 영국은 국민들에게 전쟁이 어떻게 되고 있는 지를 알려주는 통신 체계를 가지고 있었습니다. 그 중의 하나가 윈체스터 성당의 탑 위에 있었습니다.
그날 오후 늦게
“Wellington Defeated---.”
“웰링턴이 패배했다.”
라는 신호가 나타났습니다. 때마침 안개구름이 그 메시지를 읽을 수 없도록 하였습니다. 패배의 소식은 곧바로 런던 시내로 퍼져 나갔습니다. 영국이 전쟁에서 졌다는 소식을 런던 시민들이 들었기 때문에 모든 곳은 슬픔과 우울한 분위기로 가득하였습니다.
갑자기 안개가 걷혔습니다. 그리고 그 메시지의 나머지 부분을 읽을 수 있게 되었습니다. 그 메시지는 두 단어가 아니라 모두 네 단어였습니다. 온전한 메시지는 바로 이것이었습니다.
“Wellington defeated the enemy.”
“웰링턴이 적을 물리쳤다.”
는 것입니다. 이제 다시 좋은 소식이 퍼져나가는 데에도 불과 몇 분 정도 밖에 걸리지 아니하였습니다. 슬픔은 기쁨으로 바뀌었고, 패배는 승리로 바뀌었습니다.
그것은 마치 예수께서 돌아가셔서 무덤에 뉘이셨던 때와 같습니다. 예수님을 신실하게 따르던 많은 친구들의 마음속에서 소망은 죽고 말았습니다. 무시무시한 십자가 형벌 이후에 실망과 불신의 안개가 예수님의 친구들에게 살며시 파고 들어왔습니다. 그들은 오직 하나님의 메시지의 한 부분만을 읽었던 것입니다.
“Christ defeated.”
“그리스도께서 패배를 당하셨다.”
가 그들이 알고 있던 모든 것이었습니다.
그러나 사흘 째 되던 날 실망과 불신의 안개는 걷히고 세상은 완전한 하나님의 메시지를 받게 되었습니다. 온전한 메시지는 두 글자가 아니라 세 글자입니다.
“Christ defeated death!”
“예수께서 죽음을 정복하셨다!”
패배는 승리로 바뀌었고, 죽음은 생명으로 바뀌었습니다.

오늘 저는 한 가지 질문에 대하여 생각해 보고자 합니다. 그 질문은 ‘만일 예수께서 다시 사시지 않으셨다면 어떻게 되었을까?’라는 것입니다.
첫째로, 예수님은 거짓말쟁이로 드러났을 것입니다.
예수님은 당신의 부활에 대하여 여러 번 예고하셨습니다. 예수님은 처음에는 알아듣기 힘든 용어로 말씀하셨습니다. 예를 들어 요한복음 2:19에서는 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.
19 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되
너희가 이 성전을 헐라
내가 사흘 동안에 일르키리라
19 Jesus answered them,
"Destroy this temple,
and I will raise it again in three days."
그러나 예수님은 당신의 사역의 종반에 가서는 부활에 대하여 분명하게 말씀하셨습니다. 마태는 이렇게 기록하고 있습니다. 마태복음 16:21입니다.
21 이 때로부터 예수 그리스도께서 자기가 예루살렘에 올라가
장로들과 대제사장들과 서기관들에게 많은 고난을 받고
죽임을 당하고
제삼일에 살아나야 할 것을
제자들에게 비로소 나타내시니
21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples
that he must go to Jerusalem
and suffer many things
at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law,
and that he must be killed
and on the third day be raised to life.
그리고 마태복음 20:18-19에서는 이렇게 예고하셨습니다.
18 보라 우리가 예루살렘으로 올라가노니
인자가 대제사장들과 서기관들에게 넘겨지매
그들이 죽이기로 결의하고
18 "We are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of Man will be betrayed
to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.
They will condemn him to death
19 이방인들에게 넘겨주어
그를 조롱하며 채찍질하며 십자가에 못 박게 할 것이나
제삼일에 살아나리라
19 and will turn him over to the Gentiles
to be mocked and flogged and crucified.
On the third day he will be raised to life!"
그리고 마가는 예수께서 이렇게 말씀하신 것을 기록하고 있습니다. 마가복음 14:28입니다.
28 그러나 내가 살아난 후에
너희보다 먼저 갈릴리로 가리라
28 But after I have risen,
I will go ahead of you into Galilee."
부활절 아침에 그리스도의 무덤을 찾아와서 예수님의 시신이 어디 있는지 두려워하는 여인에게 천사는 이렇게 말하였습니다. 마태복음 28:6입니다.
6 그가 여기 계시지 않고
그가 말씀 하시던 대로 살아나셨느니라
와서 그가 누우셨던 곳을 보라
6 He is not here;
he has risen, just as he said.
Come and see the place where he lay.
만일 예수님의 부활이 일어나지 않았다면, 우리는 예수님을 거짓말쟁이라고 말할 수 있을 것입니다. 그리고 만일 예수께서 부활에 관하여 거짓말을 하셨다면, 우리는 어떻게 그분이 하신 다른 말씀들을 신뢰할 수 있겠습니까?

복음이 없었을 것입니다. 고린도전서 15:14 상반절입니다.
14a 그리스도께서 만일 다시 살아나지 못하셨으면
우리가 전파하는 것도 헛것이요
14a And if Christ has not been raised,
our preaching is useless
바울은 고린도전서 15:3-4에서 무엇이 복음인지 우리에게 말해주고 있습니다.
3 내가 받은 것을 먼저 너희에게 전하였노니
이는 성경대로 그리스도께서 우리 죄를 위하여 죽으시고
3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance:
that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures
4 장사지낸바 되셨다가
성경대로 사흘 만에 다시 살아나사
4 that he was buried,
that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
“복음”이라는 단어의 의미는 “기쁜 소식”이라는 뜻입니다. 그러나 복음에서 그리스도의 부활을 빼면, 우리에게는 오직 슬픈 소식만이 있고, 그것은 더 이상 기쁜 소식이 아닙니다. 반쪽짜리 복음은 전혀 복음이 아닙니다.

우리의 믿음은 헛것입니다.
고린도전서 15:14 하반절입니다.
14b 또 너희 믿음도 헛것이며
14b and so is your faith.
고린도전서 15:17입니다.
17 그리스도께서 다시 살아나신 일이 없으면
너희의 믿음도 헛되고
너희가 여전히 죄 가운데 있을 것이요
17 And if Christ has not been raised,
your faith is futile;
you are still in your sins.
죽기만 한 구주를 믿는다는 것은 어리석을 뿐만 아니라 불쌍한 것입니다. 아시아의 한 지역에 살고 있던 어느 불교신자가 그리스도교로 개종을 하였습니다. 사람들은 그에게 왜 그의 신앙이 바뀌게 되었는지 물어보았습니다. 그는 이렇게 말하였습니다. “그것은 다음과 마찬가지입니다. 만약에 당신들이 길을 가다가 갈래 길을 만나서 어디로 가야 할지 모른다고 합시다. 그리고 그곳에 두 사람이 있는데, 한 사람은 죽었고, 한 사람은 살았습니다. 그러면 당신들은 누구의 지시를 따라서 길을 가시겠습니까?” 만일 예수께서 다시 사시지 않으셔서 지금까지도 죽어 계시다면 그분은 우리를 구원하실 능력이 전여 없으신 것입니다. 그러면 우리의 믿음도 헛것이 됩니다.

우리는 미래에 대한 소망이 없습니다. 고린도전서 15:18입니다.
18 또한 그리스도 안에서 잠자는 자도 망하였으리니
18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost.
그리스도의 부활은 그분의 백성들에게 있어서 일어날 미래의 부활에 대한 보증입니다. 그러므로 그리스도께서 부활하시지 않으셨다면 이 보증도 아무런 거치가 없는 것입니다. 그리스도께서 다시 살아나지 않으셨다면, 미래에 대한 아무런 위로도 받을 수 없습니다.
6.
우리의 수고가 아무런 의미가 없습니다. We suffer for nothing. 고린도전서 15:19입니다.
19 만일 그리스도 안에서 우리가 바라는 것이
다만 이 세상의 삶뿐이면
모든 사람 가운데 우리가 더욱 불쌍한 자이리라
19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ,
we are to be pitied more than all men.
만일 그리스도께서 다시 살아나지 않으셨다면, 왜 교회에 오려고 그 고생을 하십니까? 다른 곳에 가는 것이 훨씬 더 나을 것입니다. 만일 그리스도께서 다시 살아나지 않으셨다면, 왜 헌금 접시에 돈을 집어넣느라고 그 고생을 하십니까? 아무 이유 없이 돈을 잃어버릴 뿐입니다. 만일 그리스도께서 다시 살아나지 않으셨다면, 왜 그분을 예배하기 위하여 그 고생을 하십니까? 여러분은 그저 시간을 낭비하는 것뿐입니다. 만일 그리스도께서 다시 살아나지 않으셨다면, 왜 다른 사람들에게 그분에 대하여 믿으라고 말합니까? 오히려 당신의 생명을 아끼는 것이 더 나을 것입니다.

이제 말씀을 마치겠습니다. 토마스 제퍼슨(Thomas Jefferson, 1743-1826)은 위대한 사람이었지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 그는 성경의 기적적인 요소들을 받아들일 수가 없었습니다. 그래서 그는 성경의 초자연적인 내용을 모두 다 잘라낸 그 자신만을 위한 특별한 성경을 편집하였습니다. 복음서를 편집하는 동안, 제퍼슨은 오직 그 자신만을 위한 예수님의 도덕적인 가르침만으로 제한하였습니다. 제퍼슨의 성경 복음서의 마지막 부분은 이렇게 끝납니다. “거기에 그들은 예수님을 안치했고, 큰 돌로 무덤의 입구에 굴려 놓고 떠났다.” 실제의 이야기가 이렇게 끝나지 않는 것에 대하여 하나님께 감사합니다.
그리스도는 당신께서 죽음으로부터 일어나실 것이라고 예고하셨을 때, 진실을 말씀하시고 계셨던 것입니다. 그분은 하나님의 아들이십니다. 복음은 진실로 기쁜 소식입니다. 복음은 진실로 “모든 믿는 자들을 구원하시는 하나님의 능력”입니다. 우리의 믿음은 모든 사람들을 십자가의 대속적 죽으심과 부활로 죄와 사망과 지옥으로부터 우리를 구원하신 살아계신 구주에게 뿌리를 내리고 있는 것입니다. 우리가 예수 그리스도의 기쁜 소식을 전할 때, 우리는 거짓말이 아닌 진실을 전하는 것입니다.
우리는 우리의 육체의 부활에 대한 확실한 소망이 있습니다. 우리는 육체는 무덤에만 머물러 있지 않을 것입니다. 우리의 육체는 그리스도께서 무덤에서 일어나셨던 것처럼 죽음을 이기고 다시 살아날 것입니다. 우리는 또한 “모든 사람들 중에 가장 불쌍한 자들이” 아닙니다. 우리는 이 지구상에서 가장 행복한 사람들이 될 수 있는 분명한 이유가 있습니다. 여러분은 그리스도께서 돌아가시고 다시 살아나셨기 때문에 오늘 구원받을 수 있습니다. 기도하겠습니다.

It was June 18, 1815, the Battle of Waterloo. The French under the command of Napoleon were fighting the allied forces of the British, Dutch, and Germans under the command of Wellington. The people of England depended on a system of signals to find out how the battle was going. One of these signals was on the tower of Winchester Cathedral.
Late in the day it flashed the signal: “Wellington Defeated---.” Just at that moment a fog cloud made it impossible to read the message. The news of defeat quickly spread throughout the city. The whole countryside was sad and gloomy when they heard the news that their country had lost the war.
Suddenly, the fog lifted, and the remainder of the message could be read. The message had four words, not two. The complete message was: “Wellington defeated the enemy.” It took only a few minutes for the good news to spread. Sorrow was turned into joy, defeat was turned into victory!
So it was when Jesus was laid in the tomb. Hope had died in the hearts of Jesus’ most loyal friends. After the frightful crucifixion, the fog of disappointment and misunderstanding had crept in on the friends of Jesus. They had read only part of the message. “Christ defeated” was all they knew.
But then on the third day the fog of disappointment and misunderstanding lifted, and the world received the complete message. The message had three words, not two. “Christ defeated death!” Defeat was turned into victory; death was turned into life!

I want us to consider one question today: what if Jesus didn’t rise again?
(1) Jesus would be a lier.
19 Jesus answered them,
"Destroy this temple,
and I will raise it again in three days."
But later on in His ministry He spoke quite plainly. Matthew writes, “From that time forth began Jesus to show unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day” (Matt. 16:21).

that he must go to Jerusalem
and suffer many things
at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law,
and that he must be killed
and on the third day be raised to life.
And later in 20:18-19 He predicts, “Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death. And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.”
18 "We are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of Man will be betrayed
to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.
They will condemn him to death
19 and will turn him over to the Gentiles
to be mocked and flogged and crucified.
On the third day he will be raised to life!"
Mark records Jesus saying, “But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee” (Mark 14:28).
To the women who came to Christ’s tomb on Easter morning and wondered where His body was, the angel said, “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said” (Matt. 28:6). If the resurrection did not happen, we would have to say the Jesus was a liar. And if He lied about the resurrection, could we trust His other sayings?

(2) There is not gospel.
14a And if Christ has not been raised,
our preaching is useless

that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures
Paul tells us what the gospel is in verses 3 and 4: “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” The word “gospel” means “good news.” But if the resurrection is taken from the gospel, we are left with sad news, not good news. Half a gospel is no gospel at all.

(3) Our faith is groundless.
". . . and your faith is also vain (v. 14b)." "And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins" (v. 17).
A Buddhist in Asia was converted to Christianity. They asked him "why did you change your faith?" Here’s what he said: “It’s like this: If you are walking along and came to a fork in the road and two men were there, and one was dead and the other was alive, which man’s directions would you follow?” If Jesus Christ did not rise and is still dead then He has no power to save us. Our faith is vain.
5.
"Then they also which are fallen asleep [dead] in Christ are perished" (v. 18). Christ’s resurrection is a guarantee of the future resurrection of His people; so if Christ is not risen then this guarantee is worthless. If Christ is not risen, there is no comfort.

(4) We suffer for nothing.
19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ,
we are to be pitied more than all men.
If Christ is not risen, why bother to go to church? You would be better off somewhere else. If Christ is not risen, why bother to put money in the offering plate? You’re only giving to a lost cause. If Christ is not risen, why bother to serve Him? You’re only wasting your time. If Christ is not risen, why tell others about Him? You might as well save your breath.

Thomas Jefferson(1743-1826), a great man, nevertheless could not accept the miraculous elements in Scripture. He edited his own special version of the Bible in which all references to the supernatural were deleted. Jefferson, in editing the Gospels, confined himself solely to the moral teachings of Jesus. The closing words of Jefferson’s Bible are these: “There laid they Jesus and rolled a great stone at the mouth of the sepulchre and departed.” Thank God that is not the way the story really ends!
Christ was telling the truth when He predicted He would rise from the dead. He is the Son of God. The gospel really is good news. It really is “the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.” Our faith is grounded in a living Savior who can save every person from sin, death, and hell. When we share the good news of Jesus Christ, we are spreading the truth, not a lie.
We have the sure expectation of a bodily resurrection. Our bodies will not stay in the grave; we will rise again as Christ did. And we are not of “of all men most miserable.” We have every reason to be the happiest people on earth. You can be saved today because Christ died and rose again. Let us pray.
